The Vocal Jazz Summit offers three for-credit courses designed for music educators, professional vocalists, and advanced students seeking continuing education, graduate-level credit, or a Summit certification. Each 1-credit course is delivered in a hybrid format (in person at Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach and online) and is led by Alexis Cole with the Vocal Jazz Summit faculty. Courses emphasize applied learning, reflection, and real-world integration of jazz vocal skills.
Vocal Jazz Techniques focuses on the practical development of jazz-specific vocal skills, including rhythm, articulation, phrasing, style, and improvisation. Participants engage in technique-based workshops and masterclasses, apply concepts directly to their singing, and complete a capstone project combining written reflection and recorded performance demonstrating personal growth and integration of Summit material.
Vocal Jazz Pedagogy is designed for educators seeking tools and strategies for teaching jazz voice. Through pedagogy workshops, observation, and peer teaching, participants explore effective approaches to guiding singers in style, improvisation, and performance practice. The course culminates in a formal teaching presentation, professional peer evaluation, and written reflection focused on teaching development and feedback.
Vocal Jazz Performance Fundamentals centers on building confident, compelling jazz performances. Participants study stage presence, audience communication, storytelling through song, and practical performance skills through concerts, jam sessions, and performance-focused workshops. The capstone includes reflective writing and recorded performances demonstrating applied stylistic interpretation, improvisation, and stagecraft.
All courses require full attendance, active participation, and successful completion of capstone assignments and are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Completion may be applied toward educator CEUs, graduate credit (where applicable), or a Vocal Jazz Summit Certificate.
Student Participation Certificate
The Vocal Jazz Summit Student Participation Certificate recognizes students who actively engage in Summit classes, workshops, and performance experiences. Designed for emerging vocalists and advanced students, this certificate provides formal documentation of participation in an intensive jazz education environment led by professional artists and educators.
Students earn the certificate by attending a designated number of Summit sessions and completing a brief reflection or participation requirement. The certificate serves as a valuable addition to academic portfolios, résumés, and applications, and may be submitted to schools or instructors for extra credit at their discretion.
